Highlights

In the 1950s, there were Oscars (Academy Awards) for achievements in film, Emmys for television's standout acts, and Tony Awards to acknowledge theatrical brilliance ... but there were no major awards to praise singers, musicians, songwriters, or composersgr.

On May 4, 1959, that all changed when the first Gramophone Award was bestowed; the name was later changed to the Grammy Awards we know today.

Updated, February 2024: Jay-Z and Beyoncé, two of the artists on this list, were in the news after the 2024 Grammys, due to comments Jay-Z made about the awards and Beyoncé as he accepted the Dr. Dre Global Impact Award.

Jay-Z (Shawn Corey Carter) in particular objected to the fact his wife had never been awarded a Grammy for "Album Of The Year."

In his remarks, Jay-Z said:

"I don’t want to embarrass this young lady, but she has more Grammys than everyone, and never won Album of the Year ... So even by your own metrics, that doesn’t work. Think about that. The most Grammys, never won Album of the Year. That doesn’t work."

Carter continued speaking, then added: "When I get nervous, I tell the truth":

The first Grammy Awards were held in two different locations simultaneously: the first venue was the Paris Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills, and the second was the Park Sheraton Hotel in New York.

The first “Record Of The Year” and “Song Of The Year” at the Grammy Awards was the Italian song "Nel Blu Dipinto di Blu" (famously known as "Volare") by Domenico Modugno. The first "Album Of The Year" at the Grammys was The Music From Peter Gunn by Henry Mancini.

The inaugural Grammy ceremony was essentially a dinner event, but as music evolved, many genres emerged. The Grammy evolved too, and now, winning a Grammy is a dream for most musicians.

In this musical world, many stars have achieved the most prestigious musical award many times, gained huge popularity, and have become millionaires (and even billionaires).
